Along the back road to Maui's Pu'unene sugar mill is an elegant and graceful stand of trees with roots reaching to forever, deep within the rich red clay earth. At times during the day when light and shadow are in just the right alignment, the sienna color of the clay appears to rise upward and create a soft orange glow behind the trees' gnarled branches. I've seen this happen many times, and it always fascinates me.
I asked some local farmers about these trees, but no one seemed to know what kind they were. "Old ones. Very old. Magic trees," was my favorite answer.
