Because of their densely perfumed scent, Pikaki flowers are a favorite of Hawaiian lei makers. Night blooming Pikake, a member of the Jasmine family, is especially fragrant when the moon is almost full.
Our friends planted night-blooming Pikaki underneath the bedroom window of our guest house, and the first time we stayed with them, the fragrance of this plant was so intense that it woke me up in the middle of the night. The entire house was filled with a heavy liquid honey aroma, and I went outside to see where it was coming from. There was the Pikaki plant with its white petals glowing like pearls in the moonlight. I picked one of the blossoms and put it next to my pillow.
